The hot, sunny weather has prompted one of central Ohio's earliest ozone alerts in the last decade.
The Mid-Ohio Regional Planning Commission issued an orange alert for both Memorial Day and today. That is the third-highest of six categories, meaning the air quality is unhealthy for sensitive groups. Active children and adults, and people with lung disease, such as asthma, should reduce prolonged or heavy exertion outdoors, the agency said.
One level higher and air quality would be considered unhealthy for everyone, but conditions are expected to moderate Wednesday and Thursday as temperatures drop into the mid-80s as a weak cold front moves through, dispersing some pollutants.
Last year the first ozone alert didn't occur until June 18 and, on average over the last 10 years, the first alert hadn't been issued until late June, according to data provided by the MORPC, which issues the alerts in the Columbus region.
The temperature on Memorial Day hit 92 degrees, three degrees off the record set in 1985 and 14 degrees above the average high for the day. The high for today is expected to hit 93, again nearing the 1985 record of 95.
