After several months of researching, writing papers, building projects, running labs, memorizing chemical formulas, and recording videos, members of the James Caldwell High School Chemistry Olympics teams put their skills to the test in the annual 2011 NJIT Chemistry Olympics.
Their hard work paid off, as the two teams won a total of five medals this year.
The event, organized by the NJIT Department of Chemistry and Environmental Science in conjunction with the North Jersey Section of the American Chemical Society, was held Wednesday at the NJIT campus in Newark.
Led by Robert Dubas, an AP physics and physics teacher, and Marcia Renzetti, an AP chemistry, chemistry, and forensic science teacher, the students participated in numerous events dealing with such subjects as environmental research, engineering research and chemical nomenclature.
Seniors Brandon Chen and Bobby Norgard won first place in Engineering Research with their Ozone Source
In each case, the imported power would eliminate the need for gas-fired generators that release the pollutants that can create ozone. Environmentalists recognize that while the power lines would reduce pollution locally, they would create electricity

Ozone and BC don't stay in the air as long, but they cause both warming and decreased air quality, which directly impacts human health and agriculture productivity. Because they remain in the atmosphere for only a few weeks, control measures that

A passenger enters a Kansas City Metro bus that warns of an Ozone Alert in Kansas City, Missouri, August 1, 2011. Sticky heat was expected to smother much of the country's midsection in coming days as hotter-than-usual temperatures continued to roast
The stay was the latest in a long series of setbacks to EPA efforts to regulate a family of air pollutants from coal-fired power plants and other sources, including sulfur dioxide (SO2), oxides of nitrogen (NOx), ozone, and fine particulates.

Methane is a precursor to ground-level or lower atmosphere ozone, a component of health-sapping smog, and is also a potent greenhouse gas. Ground level ozone at current levels also damages plants and reduces agricultural yields in sensitive areas.
